Soils For Salmon Campaign:
Taking a subject as basic as soil and presenting it as something spectacular can be a design challenge. From the art direction of the original photo shoot and illustrations, the campaign pieces, including kiosk posters and a brochure, were built on strong, rich, emotion invoking photos. The strength of the graphic elements held the audience and drew them to the rather mundane message of environmental protection through lawn and garden care. Too often similar environmental care messages are thrown together in nearly memo "scientist-speak" format and a very basic brochure. The Soils for Salmon pieces were able to reach people that might not otherwise have been initially motivated by the message alone.
HomeEnviro Campaign:
King County had several items — brochures, tablets, notepads, cotton shopping bags, and other miscellaneous material. The issue was they had a limited budget and very little space at the Seattle Home Show for materials (they needed something compact). The solution? A box that popped open by pushing in the perforations and required no gluing or tape. The box simply folded into itself on each side, allowing to stuff it with all different sizes of material. The outside of the packaging had small details of what was contained inside, complete with illustrations to describe each piece. An individual card for feedback or more alike material also accompanied this package. This hot little item was given out to interested parties at the show, and they had sold out before the show wrapped up for the weekend.
NW Yardener:
The recycled pot needed some sort of wrap...yet also the proper packaging to hold various sizes of materials. The key was to encompass all things into one package idea (the pots and wrap needed to be assembled at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show by volunteers on a demand basis). This packaging caught a lot of attention at the show...and they were sold out of these items before the weekend was over.
Compost Campaign:
The goal of this campaign was to promote natural yard care. Communicating an awkward subject — compost — and creating an enticing and beautiful concept was challenging. By focusing on the end product, the garden, and using that type of imagery, helped to increase in compost sales during promotion by 739% from the previous year.
Soaker Hose Campaign:
Presenting an everyday object, such as a soaker hose, in such a way as to capture the attention of the reader within three seconds of opening the newspaper or passing by a display, is an obvious challenge. By using an end result image, the message of healthier, beautiful gardens drew the reader to discover the source — simple choice of watering system.
New Homeowner Address Book:
King County wanted to increase awareness within the community of the different services available to help them reduce waste. The original plan requested a presentation folder to hold numerous brochures from a variety of county programs. I was able to convince them that new homeowners might not keep and maintain this loose-format folder. Instead, the client was persuaded to produce an address book including information pages containing the calendar of county events, city information and contact phone numbers along with blank address/number portion for future use by homeowners. Twenty thousand books were printed in the fall of 2001 and were all distributed by May of 2002 (they underestimated the books popularity, so we are printing another 30,000 to last them another six months.)
