James, we agree, all companies are in same industry and have similar products, so of course they are going to have similar content. As the posting states, “there are no new ideas," so it would be expected that all the sites should have similar themes and maybe even feel. That said, these are direct competitors and not just in industry, but literally down the street from one another.

As designers, part of our job should be to make our clients standout from the competition. They should help the clients materials look completely different from others — even within same the industry. For example, we see that in such national brands as Coke and Pepsi. Another example? Network TV channels/companies. When dealing with direct competitors, especially in close proximity, it is the job of the designer to create a website that is both familiar but more importantly distinctive. A senior designer/programmer is able to do this, no matter what tools or programs they use.

There is nothing wrong about taking someone’s idea and running with it, as long it's an improvement, and hopefully making it more unique. Although you feel the competitor's website is better, we can't help but think the site rehashes some of our previous designs that we worked on almost five years ago. With so much new technology and capabilities that are now available with today's browsers, as a client, we would hope that if we hired a design team to revamp a website, it would really pull ahead of the pack, and stand apart so far that no one would dare say it was similar.

Just food for thought. Thanks for stopping by and reading our post!

Just happened upon your site while reading up on design trends. I saw the link to this post in the "recent posts" section. I looked at all three links that you provided and I do not believe that this site copied yours at all. They are all in the same industry selling similar products so their content is going to be similar. The competitors site is a pretty generic looking wordpress theme customized for that particular business. So they used a sea landscape as a background? They sell boat parts. So what? I'm not trying to be rude when i say this, but of the three sites, i thought the Hatton site was the best designed and most visually attractive.
so if they copied you, then they improved the design.

Great to hear from you Neil! While it is one of the most popular, the Nook isn't quite as popular as the other three. We decided to only take the top three, the Nook didn't make the cut. Why? The Nook is a good buy, but it lacks some of the features that our top three offer for a similar price point such as high resolution screen, the processor isn't quite as fast as our top three, it has very little storage with no option for web storage such as a cloud application or SD card slot.

We really appreciate the comment. We always like to hear from our readers.
